Johnny Marr’s influence on the music group Electronic, formed with Bernard Sumner (of New Order and Joy Division fame), is both significant and transformative. The collaboration between Marr, known for his work as the guitarist and songwriter in The Smiths, and Sumner, a key member of New Order, brought together two of the most iconic figures in British alternative music of the 1980s and 1990s. Their combined talents in Electronic led to a sound that blended the best elements of their respective bands—Marr’s jangly, melodic guitar and Sumner’s electronic, danceable beats—into something fresh and innovative.

Electronic was born in 1989, when Marr and Sumner first began working together. The collaboration initially stemmed from a mutual admiration and a shared desire to experiment outside the constraints of their main bands. At the time, New Order’s sound was heavily influenced by synthesizers and dance music, while Marr had just left The Smiths and was seeking a new creative direction after years of working within more traditional rock frameworks.

The two musicians came together as Electronic with the goal of exploring new territories, particularly in the realm of electronic dance music, where they could combine Sumner’s synth-driven background with Marr’s distinctive guitar work.
